The Bike
The Yamaha FJR1300 has become a mainstay in the motorcycle sport-touring category since its?>
introduction to the ?>
low maintenance shaft drive and hard luggage make it a great platform for big mile days on both inter-
state and secondary roads. Paul’s bike has been highly modified for extended travel. These modifica-
tions include: oversized windscreen, a tailored-to-his-tush custom seat, high-intensity discharge lighting,
an extra 4.7 gallon custom fuel tank, performance suspension components, two global positioning units,
a land-satellite tracking device, and hands-free cellular phone system for talking to his lovely bride.
Long Distance riding is really about preparation; mind, body and equipment. ATGATT (All The
Gear All The Time) is an LD rider's montra. A good helmet, jacket, riding pants, sturdy gloves and
heavy boots are necessary to log big miles and protect you from the elements and injury.
“Farkles” is a term used to describe modifications and equipment used to increase the comfort and
distance of rides. Farkles commonly seen in the LD community are custom seats, oversized wind-
screens, heated clothing, extra fuel tanks, drinking systems (heat + wind = dehydration), extra lights
for night riding, GPS units and communication systems that allow the use of a cell phone or CB while
riding. The key to making big miles is to keep moving. Bike preparation and equipment selection is
key to this goal.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to LD ride or participate in endurance rallies. Entry fees,
lodging and gas are the biggest rally expenses. But the sport can be addictive; accessories can add
to the fun and their cost can add up. You’ve been warned!
